Mount Kinabalu (Borneo)
On Mt. Kinabalu (4095 m; see Visit the Alpine),
the summit region is composed of
spectacular, bare volcanic rocks offering little
substrate and shelter for trees. Hence, the
actual position of the high elevation tree limit
(Fig. 1)
may be suppressed by < 50 m from
where it could be if there were sufficient
substrate. The elfin wood treeline is formed by
two species.
